Samba 4.4.4 sample config – Public sharing – no passwd required in 4 easy steps ( tested on Slackware 14.2 ):

  1. empty your smb.conf file
  2. paste the lines below in it :

[global]

workgroup = WORKGROUP

server string = %h server (Samba, Slackware)

dns proxy = no

log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m

max log size = 1000

syslog = 0

server role = standalone server

security = user

map to guest = Bad Password

passdb backend = tdbsam

obey pam restrictions = yes

unix password sync = yes

usershare allow guests = yes
# Public Share
[Public Share]
comment = Fileserver Sharing
path = /sharedfiles
public = yes
writable = yes
available = yes
browsable = yes
guest ok = yes
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777

3.  Save the file

4. Stop and restart samba ( /etc/rc.d/rc.samba stop and /etc/rc.d/rc.samba start)
